4 Key Tips for Beginner Musicians

So you’ve purchased yourself a shiny new toy and decided to venture down the rabbit hole of learning an instrument. It’s an exciting journey! But also can be quite overwhelming, especially in the beginning. Figuring out where to start, what are the best practices in learning, and how to stay inspired. That’s why we’ve highlighted a few tips for first-time players.

Ask Yourself: What are your Goals as a Musician?

Are you wishing to play just for fun? Aiming to be a famous rock star? Or something completely different or somewhere in between? Ask yourself what drove you to the interest in playing music. What are your favorite genres? What do you wish to learn? Do you see yourself performing for others or in the comfort of your own home? Having clear goals in mind help you learn and achieve your desired musicianship much quicker. And this isn’t to say your goals won’t change with time, check in with yourself frequently on what you’re enjoying most and what has lost your interest.

Patience, Practice, & Purpose Makes Perfect

We know it’s said over and over…but practice, practice, and more practice truly is the real way to become the musician you aspire to be. It helps to have consistency in your practice, make it part of your daily-weekly routine to sit down with your instrument and play. Having purposeful practice time is key and the beauty is if you keep with it, there is only room to grow from there. And always remember to be easy on yourself in the learning process. There will be mistakes, but we simply embrace, learn, and carry on.

Learn with a Professional

All these tips and practices become easier when you have a mentor, someone who will keep you motivated and help hold you accountable. Keep with it…Don’t Give up…and Make it Fun!

Don’t get too swept up in the technicalities. It takes time to learn an instrument and meet your goals, and it can get frustrating, but it should always stay fun. If you find yourself in a rut trying to learn the same thing over and over, you’re going to grow tired and frustrated. Take a moment and come back later or the next day…it may surprise you what a short break and refresh can do for your muscle memory.

Learning an instrument and becoming a musician is a long process and it does take work. However, the only way to not make progress is when you give up. Keep with it and you’ll be gloriously reaching all your goals in no time!
