Voice Lessons: why are voice lessons even necessary?
Why are voice lessons even necessary?
This is a GREAT question. We all have the natural ability to sing so why do we even need someone to teach us how to sing? Can’t I just listen to other people sing and emulate their sound or just experiment singing on my own? Won’t my child or won’t I develop a good voice like that?
It is easy to think that is the case but there are actually a LOT of reasons as to why taking voice lessons with an experienced singer and educator is helpful and even necessary. We have to train and treat our bodies for singing just as we would for a sport, swimming, dancing or other physical activity.
To be a GREAT singer you need:
education
experience
practice
Shock City School of Music provides excellent vocal training (education…. check), lots of performance opportunities (experience…. check), and practice building skills (practice…. check).
Proper technique is essential.
Technique is extremely important for singers to build. Good technique equates to efficient easy singing. Singing with inappropriate or harmful technique can lead to the development of long-term bad habits and eventually unhealthy vocal development into adulthood. Without the guidance of a seasoned voice instructor it would be highly possible that you may not even be aware that you are using poor or incorrect technique.
The acquisition of an appropriate technique is essential in order to prevent injury…. Let us help!
So no. You don’t NEED a voice teacher for you to sing in the car along to your favorite songs. We are blessed with the biological functions and anatomy that allows us to sing from a very early age. However, if you want to do any true singing, plan to sing complex songs (high, loud, long, melodically or technically advanced) then you will need a voice teacher to help guide the way.
Individuals (both children and adults) who try to develop a singing voice without proper instruction often encounter these issues:
unnatural vibrato development
tension in the larynx, tongue, neck, etc
anxiety about singing/performing
vocal unreliability
lack of vocal stamina
technical faults
issues with pitch, rhythm, and musicality
lack of music concept and theory understanding
inability to read music
inability to sing with accompaniment or other musical parts
Vocal training is essential to achieve an efficient and balanced physical performance, which is done through learning and practicing the right technique.
You have the talent. We give you the skills.
